Fun in Birdland on our #SummerOf17

One of our favourite Cotswold attractions, one that we keep coming back to and one where we always have a great time as a family, is Birdland in Bourton-on-the-Water. We went to Birdland today on our #SummerOf17 Staycation in the Cotswolds and, as expected, we had a super time!

    Just a splash of sunshine

Weatherwise, today was like most of the days in this 2017 summer in the Cotswolds: Grey with just a splash of occasional sunshine. But it wasn’t raining, so we were excited about that and nothing could stop us having fun in Bourton-on-the-Water today.

    Chatting with penguins

The penguin enclosure was our first stop. It’s so great to be able to experience penguins up close – we’ve never been to another animal park where you can get anywhere near that close – we hung around for ages as a couple of the penguins were especially active today, walking back and forth, stopping right by us all the time for a little “chat”. Fantastic.

    Time for some prehistoric fun

Then, after a gentle stroll through the first part of the park, we got to The Jurassic Journey. It’s been a good few years now since Matthew was into dinosaurs, but as soon as we entered the land of 65 million years ago, he was right back where he was when he loved dinosaurs the most, haring all of his dinosaur knowledge as we walked through the trail, discovering the excitement of life-size dinosaurs, fossil-hunting and prehistoric fun.

    The slowest kind of fun

Then it was time for a play and a coffee (and there might have been cake and crisps too!) and what was supposed to be just a short break, ended up being nearly an hour and a half in the outdoor play area and it was great entertainment for all. Well rested and ready to move on, it was time for the daily 12.15pm ‘Meet the Keeper’ animal handling session. We missed the birds today, but the tortoises were out and it was the slowest fun we had all day. There’s something so fabulous about being up close and personal with animals, and the tortoises were great sports, allowing us to get close to them today.

    See you again next time

From the interactive fun to the Discovery Zone where we saw the cutest chicks and ducklings, also up close and personal. From there, it was time for ice cream (oh, yes!) and then we walked through the rest of the park, enjoying the many cages, enclosures and bird environments. We spent a total of 4 hours in Birdland today.. and we’re already excited about going back again next time.
