In the charming town of Berkeley stands Berkeley Castle, a magnificent fortress dating back to the 11th century. What makes this ancient stronghold truly remarkable is its unbroken connection to the Berkeley family, who have resided within its walls since the late 12th century. For an astonishing nine centuries, the castle, its lineage, its extensive archives (reaching back to the 12th century), its contents, the surrounding estate, and even the town itself have all endured together, a testament to time and tradition.

Berkeley Castle’s historical significance extends beyond its pristine preservation. The Berkeley family and their ancestral home have played pivotal roles in the power struggles that shaped centuries of English history, offering a unique window into the past.

The gardens

Originally, the castle’s formidable walls dropped sharply to the south. Early in its history, water from the nearby River Severn was ingeniously channelled to create defensive stretches on this side, while a ditch later provided protection to the north, between the castle and the church. The main approach was via a western slope, leading to what is now the Gatehouse, the last remnant of a double-drawbridge and immense octagonal towers that once guarded the entrance to the Outer Bailey.

Over the generations, the stern facade of the castle walls has been softened by the introduction of vibrant flora. The current planting of the terraces, completed with the expert guidance of Gertrude Jekyll at the turn of the last century, is a sight to behold. These exquisite gardens are celebrated for their enchanting scents, with the roses in particular offering a delightful display in June. Visitors can also discover an array of rare plants, shrubs, and trees, creating what one recent visitor aptly described as “a calm oasis in a busy world.” Echoes of earlier times can still be found, such as the long “bowling green” below the sloping approach to the gatehouse, believed to be where Queen Elizabeth I herself played bowls during her stay.
