Mallory Court achieves coveted Green Tourism Gold Certification

Mallory Court Country House Hotel & Spa has secured a prestigious Green Tourism Gold certification, a testament to its significant advancements in sustainability throughout the past year. This achievement propels the hotel closer to its ambitious goal of reaching net zero by 2040.

Green Tourism, a leading certification program that has assessed travel, tourism, and hospitality businesses for over 27 years, awards bronze, silver, and gold gradings based on rigorous evaluations of sustainability practices.

A comprehensive approach to sustainability

A key factor in securing the gold certification was the appointment of “green champions” within the hotel. These individuals have been instrumental in fostering a consistent and comprehensive approach to sustainability across all facets of the business. Their efforts have ensured engagement and demonstrable progress in diverse areas, including community involvement, employee health and well-being, and enhanced customer experiences. Furthermore, the hotel has made considerable strides in crucial environmental aspects such as energy usage, carbon reduction, and waste management.

Mallory Court is part of the Eden Hotel Collection, a group of five hotels across the Midlands and South West. Notably, all hotels within the collection now operate on 100% renewable energy. The collective’s commitment to waste management is also impressive, with 35.5% of last year’s waste directly recycled, 55% converted into renewable energy, and 9.5% anaerobically digested.

Josefine Blomqvist, General Manager at Mallory Court, expressed her delight: “We know that sustainability is increasingly becoming a key consideration for customers when they are booking a stay – so we are thrilled to be leading the way in Leamington when it comes to green credentials.” She highlighted various initiatives, including hosting pupils from Myton School to offer insights into hotel operations, conducting tours of the hotel’s kitchen gardens for guests, and collaborating with local vineyards to sell their products.

Leading the Way in Green Hospitality

Jayne O’Malley, Group Operations Director at Eden Hotel Collection, has played a pivotal role in elevating the organisation’s green credentials, working closely with each hotel and Green Tourism’s expert assessors. “Sustainability is much more than simply adopting environmentally friendly practices,” O’Malley emphasised. “It’s about creating a sustainable business in every sense – from our people and our local community, through to the growth of our own organisation and our supply chain.”

She added that while some of the properties in the collection date back to the 16th century, ongoing investment in sustainability has positioned them at the forefront of modern green hospitality. This includes the widespread use of renewable energy, strong relationships with local suppliers, and the utilisation of on-site kitchen gardens for both produce and unique guest experiences.

“Each of our hotels were initially graded by Green Tourism in 2023 with silver or bronze gradings – so to see each hotel making that step up one year on is testament to the commitment that our people have shown to take on board advice from the assessors to make us one of the leading hotel groups in the UK not just for a luxurious stay, but for sustainability too,” O’Malley concluded.

These significant Green Tourism accolades follow closely on the heels of the Eden Hotel Collection being named Small Hotel Group of the Year by the AA, further solidifying its position as a leader in the UK hospitality sector.
