• The portrait session that made me forget I don’t like having my picture taken

In my work, I take pictures. Wherever I go in the Cotswolds, I have my phone out, finger on the “trigger”, ready to capture people, places, buildings, villages, events, and all the outstanding natural beauty.

Now, with all that picture-taking, I’ll be completely honest with you, I’m about as comfortable in front of a camera as a Scandie troll caught in daylight. But we must all face our fears, so I steeled myself and went to see Lorentz Gullachsen for a portrait session.

Great decision. Lorentz somehow made me forget how I hate being in front of the camera. Yes, it was awkward at first, but 15 minutes in, I was ready for smoke and wind machines, pouting, posing, waving, and taking on the paparazzi… ish.

Lorentz’ studio is a friendly space, so as we started chatting between lens swaps and background changes, my muscles and my smile became more and more relaxed. We talked about our work, our lives, our shared friends and acquaintances, the Cotswolds, his photography philosophy, and about how we should all be a bit more Scandie 😉 It was a great couple of hours.

And then, a few days later, came the headshots to me on email and I was truly amazed… amazed that Lorentz had managed to make me look polished and professional, but also like myself. The lines in my face had not been air-brushed or smoothed (much) and, yes, the pictures were styled, but it was still me… on a good day.

Lorentz didn’t just take my portrait; he helped me rediscover how to present myself with authenticity. If you’re camera-shy or simply want a photographer who understands the power of capturing your true personality, I can’t recommend him enough.

Check out Lorentz’ work on www.gullachsen.com. He’s an experienced photographer specialising in advertising, commercial and portrait photography.

Below: A nice selection portraits by Lorentz Gullachsen. Just me, Mette Lacey, alongside Chris Packham, Amal Clooney, Dame Judi Dench, Jeremy Vine and Michael McIntyre.

If you thought I’d pass up my only ever chance to appear next to these icons and write their names in a sentence next to my own… well, you can see how wrong you’d be.
