A spectacular dining and spa retreat ∙ Our 24 hours at The Greenway Hotel & Spa
On the last Sunday of November, we pulled up to The Greenway Hotel & Spa to see the grand facade of the beautiful building and the entrance, all dressed up for Christmas, and we couldn’t wait to get inside.
A Christmas getaway
We were there for a little getaway and hoped to be in for a treat… we stepped into the hotel and were met by a friendly smile at reception, a warm atmosphere, and found the place all decked out for Christmas, and then we knew for sure that we would be.
Our room, one of their Feature Rooms above the spa, was a total dream! It was huge, with a comfy super-king size bed, plush furnishings, and a large double bathroom (two sinks, double shower, extra large tub – amazing), a sofa and table, and a balcony with stunning views of the garden and the surrounding countryside.
Beautiful room, stunning garden view
The view of the gardens was amazing, and the whole room just felt so luxurious. It was the perfect place to relax and unwind. The plate of chocolates with ‘welcome’ written in chocolate was a lovely touch… as was the bowl of fruit and a cute welcome postcard with the pretty watercolour of the hotel.
We’ve been to The Greenway before, so we know how wonderful the gardens are. Beautifully landscaped and perfect for a peaceful stroll, and on a sunny day, the outdoor terrace is the perfect spot for a drink or a light bite. Plus, the hotel’s eco-friendly approach to gardening is right up our street. We did have a quick stroll in the grounds before we went to the spa, but the weather was not the on this late November afternoon, so we went back in.. it was time to go to the spa.
Luxurious spa, wonderfully relaxing
The spa was completely fabulous. The muted light of the room and the shining blue of the pool is the perfect backdrop for a luxurious and calm experience. The pool is lovely and great for a swim and the hydrotherapy section, with its soothing jets and gentle current, was the ideal way to start our spa experience. We spent hours lounging on the comfortable loungers, dipping in and out of the pool, and simply enjoying the peacefulness. The outdoor hot tub in the courtyard, was a unique and refreshing experience, especially on this chilly and dark winter afternoon. We had the most wonderful time and left refreshed and relaxed, ready for dinner.
An extraordinary dining experience
Our dining experience at The Garden Room was extraordinary. The restaurant’s elegant decor is beautiful and comfortable, perfect for a romantic dinner. The friendly staff and chefs went out of their way to accommodate our dietary requirements, creating delicious dishes that weren’t even on the menu.
We started with a little lentil cigar amuse-bouche, which was a lovely surprise and an incredibly delicious mouthful. Then sourdough bread, which was delicious, and served with butter, olive oil and balsamic vinegar.
Fine dining deliciousness, on and off menu
For starters, we had the mushroom dish, which was lovely, and the beetroot terrine, which was the vegan option the chef created for me off-menu. It was beautiful, in both looks and taste and the dish of the night for me.
For main we both opted for the mushroom risotto. It was creamy, flavoursome, true fine-dining comfort food.
For dessert, we both had a chocolate tart with raspberry sorbet, another vegan option that hadn’t been on the set menu but was happily created just for us. It was the perfect way to end our meal. The rich, dark chocolate complemented the tartness of the raspberry sorbet, creating a harmonious blend of flavours. This was Robin’s dish of the night and one we will both remember for a long time.
First class service
To round off the perfect fine-dining experience, we enjoyed coffees and little after-dinner chocolates and jellies. We had the most wonderful time. Every single dish was the perfect blend of flavours and textures, and everything was so beautifully presented.
After dinner, we retired to our room, where we sank into the plush bed and drifted off to sleep… the best sleep we’ve had in a long time.
The next morning, we woke up feeling refreshed and rejuvenated. The continental breakfast buffet was a delightful way to start the day, with a variety of pastries, fruits, and yoghurts. The first class service we had experienced in the dining room the night before, was continued seamlessly at breakfast.
