• Our underground visit to the Broadway Tower bunker

Perched atop the highest point in the Cotswolds, Broadway Tower stands as a majestic landmark, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. Yet, beneath the ground next to the tower lies a hidden treasure – a Cold War nuclear bunker, a relic of a bygone era that invites visitors on a captivating journey through time.

    Stepping into the past

As you descend into the bunker, the world outside fades away, replaced by an atmosphere of historic significance. The climb down the ladder into the dimly lit room, lined with original signage and equipment, transport you back to a time when the threat of nuclear war loomed.

    A sanctuary in the shadows

The bunker served as a regional monitoring post during the Cold War, tasked with detecting and reporting potential nuclear attacks. Inside, you’ll discover the control room, where operators would have worked tirelessly, monitoring radar screens and communications systems. The bunker is one room, so the living quarters for those working there consist of a bunk bed on one wall with rations and kitchen equipment in a box underneath it.

    Tales of resilience and preparedness

The bunker’s story is a testament to human resilience and preparedness in the face of an unimaginable threat. The dedicated personnel who manned the bunker were prepared to act at a moment’s notice, their vigilance a safeguard against the unthinkable.

    A link to history

Today, the bunker stands as a poignant reminder of the Cold War era, a stark contrast to the tranquility of the Cotswolds landscape above. Visitors can gain a deeper understanding of the global tensions that shaped this period, while also appreciating the ingenuity and determination of those who prepared for the worst.
