The iconic Broadway Tower is the Cotswolds’ highest castle and a site that offers interest for everyone. When you visit Broadway Tower on Fish Hill just outside the beautiful village of Broadway, you go on a journey into the past to discover the history of the Tower and some of its notable residents.
Once you have discovered the tower, taken in the incredible and far-reaching views, learned about the Cold War and explored the nuclear bunker on site, met the red deer in the park, you are offered a warm welcome in the Morris & Brown café and shop. A visit to Broadway Tower truly is an experience and one you mustn’t come to the Cotswolds and miss.
Broadway Tower is an iconic landmark, on top of the beautiful Cotswolds escarpment, it has enjoyed a colourful history since its conception by Capability Brown over 200 years ago. An eccentric mix of architectural styles the Tower has been home to the renowned printing press of Sir Thomas Phillips, country retreat for the Pre-Raphaelite artists William Morris, Burne-Jones and Rossetti as well as a farmhouse. Visitors can relive its history on three museum floors before climbing the rooftop-viewing platform from which up to 16 counties can be seen.
Close by is the nuclear bunker built to record nuclear activity during the Cold War and remaining “secret” until its decommissioning in 1991. Today the bunker is presented as it was during service when crewed by the Royal Observer Corps. The bunker is open weekends from April to October for guided tours only.
The site café is beautiful and contemporary space and an ideal place to relax with friends or after an exhaustive walk /cycle. Maybe you fancy a hazelnut hot chocolate in front of the log fire or a chilled white wine on the terrace? Delicious food and drink is served all day and before you leave, make sure you take time to visit the shop for inspirational gift ideas.
