• Countryside Relaxation at The Wood Norton

“It was Robin’s birthday, and of course this comes with about a whole week of celebrations, but on the day, I wanted for us to enjoy some lovely countryside relaxation, which, at The Wood Norton, comes with amazing food, feet up by the fire and late-night drinks on the moon-lit terrace. So I booked us in for the birthday celebrations”.

The Wood Norton is arguably one of the most spectacular countryside hotels in the UK. Beautifully crafted, built by the Duc D’Orleans, exiled French Royalty in 1897, featuring original 19th Century French Decorative interiors.

Located just outside the bustling riverside market town of Evesham, known for the horticultural Vale of Evesham, affectionately known as the fruit and vegetable basket of England, but the town itself is very much up-and-coming with fantastic cafes, eateries, pubs and beer gardens in the centre of town as well as throughout the outskirts. With Worcester, Stratford-upon-Avon, and Cheltenham no more than a 15-25 minute drive away and the picturesque Cotswold town of Broadway only 10 minutes down the road, Evesham truly is the perfect location from where to explore nearly and a little further afield.

    Spectacular, nothing less.

We’d been to The Wood Norton many times before (in fact, we had our very first date there, so it’s a very special place for us), but we’d never been to stay overnight. We checked in and were shown to the most spectacular suite. The views were incredible, the bathroom was luxurious and almost the size of the room itself, and the bed was huge, soft, and fabulous… it was all beautiful and absolutely perfect.

    A really wonderful restaurant.

I love the restaurant at The Wood Norton. Dimmed lighting, wooden walls and romantic decor, completely in keeping with the rest of this beautiful hotel… it’s right up my street. The menu is ever-changing, always following the seasons and always full of the most mouthwateringly delicious dishes. On this evening, we had an incredibly delicious 3-course meal, perfect for a special celebration.

Top class service, top class team.

When we arrived, I managed to nip into the restaurant without Robin to ask if we could please have the same table we had on the night we met. They were happy to book this for us, and they asked if the dinner was a celebration, so of course, I told them it was Robin’s birthday. For the remainder of our stay, several members of staff, who must have been made aware of the celebration that was the reason for our visit, congratulated Robin and made friendly remarks about his birthday. It was a lovely touch, not least when our desserts arrived, and Robin’s had a special Birthday message added. Top-class service from the top-class team at The Wood Norton.

We love a good hotel breakfast.

We absolutely love love love a good hotel breakfast. Don’t you? An abundance of nuts, yoghurts, Danish, jams, and everything you could possibly desire on your plate in the morning. And then I haven’t even mentioned the cooked breakfast that comes with it. It’s just SO good. And the breakfast at The Wood Norton was just that: SO good! It was more than good… it was fantastic! It was delicious, and the cooked options were so scrummy it was impossible to choose. Robin went for a Full English, and I, unashamedly, chose the Waffle, Bacon and Maple Syrup……….. sooooo delicious!

The History of The Wood Norton

In 1939, the estate was bought by the BBC so it could relocate its operations away from London in the event of hostilities. A dozen studios were quickly erected, and by 1940 Wood Norton was one of the largest broadcasting centres in Europe, with an average output of 1,300 programmes a week.

The Wood Norton now offers fifty rooms, including five spectacular suites, a restaurant using the finest local produce, a contemporary bar and alfresco dining terrace, sumptuous private dining, state-of-the-art boardroom and meeting facilities, extensive grounds and formal gardens, and a beautiful wedding venue for up to 180 guests.

Equidistant from Worcester, Stratford-Upon-Avon and Cheltenham, it is the perfect location for exploring the Cotswolds, Worcestershire and the Malvern Hills, recognised as some of the most beautiful parts of the United Kingdom. Shakespeare country is within easy reach, as are other landmarks such as Broadway and surrounding villages, inspiration to artists and writers such as Henry James, J. M. Barrie, William Morris and Elgar.

Important, modern locations are also close by. Birmingham Airport and the NEC (45 mins), Cheltenham Racecourse (30 mins) and The Belfry (45 mins). Birmingham and Oxford city centres are less than an hour away.

The Wood Norton is a stunning destination, be it for a fabulous country weekend break, a business event or the perfect wedding.

See you at The Wood Norton

We’ve been back to The Wood Norton several times since Robin’s wonderful birthday celebration. It’s the perfect place for a coffee or afternoon tea, for a drink in the evening, for a play with the kids outside in the beautiful garden on a hot day, for lunch or for dinner any time… in the summer time I even go there to sit outside on the wonderful terrace to work in the sun. It’s one of our favourite places to go for absolutely any kind of outing… see you there.
