Creative evenings and culinary experiences ∙ Workshops at The Chequers and The Swan
Across the Cotswolds, there are pubs… and then there are places like The Chequers in Churchill and The Swan in Ascott-under-Wychwood. These are dining destinations in their own right, and both known not only for exceptional food, but for the kind of warm, intuitive hospitality that turns a meal into something memorable.
Both pubs are owned and run by the Lionhearth Group and set within two of the most picturesque villages in the Cotswolds, both pubs combine beautiful surroundings with a genuine sense of welcome, making them among the very best in our region, and well beyond.

Evenings of creativity and connection
But that’s not all. What elevates The Chequers and The Swan even further, is the way they bring people together beyond the dining table. Their growing calendar of workshops and events offers something different, a chance to connect, create and experience these spaces in a more relaxed, social way.
At The Chequers, creativity takes centre stage with an Introduction to Modern Calligraphy workshop on 7 May at 7pm. Designed for beginners, it’s an opportunity to slow down, learn a new skill and enjoy a mindful, hands-on experience in a beautiful setting. With expert guidance and a welcoming atmosphere, it’s as much about the experience as it is about the end result, perfect for those looking to try something new or simply spend an evening doing something a little different.

Sip & Paint at The Swan
Over at The Swan, the focus shifts to a more expressive and sociable format with the Sip & Paint evening on 14 May. Combining creativity with a relaxed, informal vibe, guests are invited to enjoy a drink while painting, making it an ideal night out with friends or a chance to meet like-minded people. It’s fun, accessible and refreshingly unpretentious, exactly the kind of experience that suits the setting so well.

A taste of Italy in the heart of the Cotswolds
Back at The Chequers, the much-loved Wine Club evenings continue to draw in both regulars and new faces alike. On Thursday 30 April, guests are invited to explore Italy with Antinori, one of the country’s most celebrated wine producers.
This thoughtfully curated evening includes four beautifully paired courses, each designed to complement the wines and enhance the overall experience. From scallops with tomato and avruga paired with Vermentino, to a rich lamb ragu alongside Nizza Bansella, followed by Gorgonzola with Villa Antinori Rosso, and a delicate panna cotta with Moscato d’Asti, it’s a journey through Italian flavours, brought to life by expert guidance.
Hosted in the private dining room, the Wine Club has become a regular highlight, offering a relaxed yet refined way to explore new wines, enjoy exceptional food and connect with others in an intimate setting.

More than just dining
What ties all of these experiences together is a shared philosophy. At both The Chequers and The Swan, it’s not just about serving great food, though they do that exceptionally well, it’s about creating moments. Whether through a creative workshop, a sociable evening with friends, or a deeper dive into food and wine, these events add another layer to what already makes these pubs so special.
In settings that feel both effortlessly stylish and warmly familiar, guests are invited to do more than dine. They are invited to take part, to learn, to connect and to enjoy something a little out of the ordinary. For those looking to experience the Cotswolds in a way that goes beyond the expected, these workshops offer the perfect place to start.
