• A true taste of the Cotswolds ∙ Our dinner in The Back Garden at Dormy House

June 2025 ∙ Luxurious, classy, and magnificent yet relaxed and laid-back… so is the setting of Dormy House and their restaurant, The Back Garden. You walk in, you’re seated, you’re welcomed warmly, you’re instantly put at ease… and then it immediately becomes apparent: You’re in for a remarkable culinary experience.

Here is a restaurant that truly embodies its philosophy of celebrating the “Best of British” produce. Their brand new menu and our dinner here was a delightful journey through the rich culinary landscape of the Cotswolds and surrounding shires, showcasing an admirable commitment to local, seasonal, and sustainable ingredients.

    An ode to local flavours

The service at The Back Garden was attentive and friendly, striking the perfect balance between professional and welcoming. Our meal began with an exquisite amuse-bouche of a butternut velouté, a delicious start that set the tone for the quality and the flavours that followed. For the start of the meal, we also enjoyed a lovely sourdough from artisan Cotswold bakery Otis & Belle, a pointer of what was to come by emphasising the restaurant’s dedication to local suppliers.

    A wonderful start

The starters continued to impress with their thoughtful combinations and fresh ingredients. The cauliflower soup was elevated by a vibrant nettle pesto and the bright notes of preserved lemon, complemented by the crunch of toasted hazelnuts. Across the table, the heirloom tomatoes shone, perfectly paired with a delicate almond and garlic cream, fragrant basil, and the subtle saltiness of black olives.

    Showcasing regional excellence

The main courses were a masterclass in ingredient-led cooking. The Wiltshire truffle tagliatelle, a true highlight, featured the distinct aroma and earthy flavour of truffles, balanced by a creamy vegan parmesan and the delightful texture of crispy hen of the woods mushrooms. This dish perfectly exemplified The Back Garden’s promise to let the flavours speak for themselves. The courgette and basil risotto was equally impressive, with a creamy texture, fresh basil, and the tangy addition of vegan feta and a vibrant tomato salad. It’s clear that the chefs here work with a deep respect for what’s grown and raised close by.

    Best risotto anywhere, ever

“If, like me, you’re vegan, you will have had many a risotto when dining out. They will not all have been fabulous, so your expectations are probably low when another risotto is placed in front of you in a restaurant. The vegan courgette and basil risotto at The Back Garden is, hands down, the best I’ve had. Anywhere. Ever. The dish impressed with its vibrant colours and freshness, thoughtful composition, and great texture… basically a big, comforting, happy hug on a plate”. ~ Mette, Cotswolds Concierge.

    A sweet, sweet finish

Dessert brought a sweet conclusion to our meal. The coconut rice pudding offered a tropical escape with its bright mango and pineapple sorbet, while the classic egg custard tart was elevated by the tart sweetness of rhubarb. It was pure deliciousness.

    Focus on seasonality and sustainability

Our dinner at The Back Garden was more than just a meal; it was an experience that celebrated the bounty of the Cotswolds and a little further afield. The focus on seasonality and sustainability, combined with thoughtful cooking, truly allows the quality of the ingredients to shine. We left feeling thoroughly impressed, understanding why Dormy House proudly positions The Back Garden as a destination for exceptional, locally-rooted dining.
