Incredible lunch, local produce, and scenic views at The Cotswold Outpost
Yesterday we were treated to a wonderful experience at The Cotswold Outpost in Burford. We had a fantastic lunch there and immensely enjoyed the top-class food offering, the local produce, and the friendly service.
Located conveniently just off the A40 in Burford, it’s the perfect pitstop for anyone exploring the Cotswolds, whether you’re coming from the charming waterways of Bourton-on-the-Water, the historic beauty of Stow-on-the-Wold, the vibrant bustle of Cheltenham, or beyond.
A fantastic menu
The Cotswold Outpost is a super destination for locals, visitors, and tourists in the Cotswolds. Inside, the atmosphere is warm and welcoming, with stunning views adding to the lovely setting. We were visiting for lunch on this slightly cool June Thursday, and we were very impressed with the menu – all-day breakfast, afternoon tea, sandwiches, cakes, teas and coffees, and a mains selection of great classic dishes like bangers and mash, cottage pie and curries.
A total winner and the best ever
We ordered the fish and chips and the butternut Wellington. The fish & chips was an absolute winner, boasting perfectly crispy golden batter around melt-in-your-mouth fish and perfect crispy-on-the-outside-soft-in-the-middle chips. The super star of the show was the butternut Wellington. We’ve tried many a vegan Wellington and this was a revelation! Absolutely bursting with flavour, beautifully presented, and easily the best we’ve ever had.
Showcasing local
It’s clear that The Cotswold Outpost takes pride in showcasing the best of the region. Their coffee is sourced from Stow Town Coffee, a local roastery known for its exceptional blends, their eggs are from Cacklebean Farm on Burford Road, and every dish on their menu sings with the freshness of locally sourced produce. The dedication of their chef shines through on every level, and his reputation for creating innovative and delicious meals that celebrate Cotswold bounty is well-deserved.
The milk vending machine
But the deliciousness doesn’t stop there! After our lovely lunch, we couldn’t resist venturing outside to explore the milk vending machine. With a touch of nostalgia, we filled our glass bottle with a litre of fresh, creamy milk straight from Cotswold Organic Dairy Farm. The honesty box system for the flavourings was a charming touch, and with it we made ours into chocolate milk, which turned out to be the perfect post-lunch treat.
A fantastic destination
The Cotswold Outpost is more than just a Cotswold cafe; it’s an experience and a wonderful destination. From the stunning views and friendly service to the local produce and innovative dishes, it’s a must-visit for anyone exploring this beautiful region.
