Our perfect day out at Berkeley Castle

∙ OUR PERFECT DAY OUT AT BERKELEY CASTLE ∙ We had the loveliest day at Berkeley Castle. It was one of those days out that completely exceeds expectations. Beautiful gardens, stunning views, fascinating history, fantastic food, and a friendly and relaxed atmosphere throughout the whole place. It’s the sort of destination where you arrive thinking you’ll stay a couple of hours and suddenly half the day has disappeared.

∙ EXPLORING THE CASTLE ∙ The castle itself is so interesting. It feels huge in terms of history and atmosphere, but at the same time surprisingly cosy and welcoming. Every room, corridor and staircase has something to discover and there’s always another little doorway, courtyard or view to stumble across. It never felt stuffy or overly formal either, which made exploring it feel really enjoyable and relaxed.

∙ GARDENS, VIEWS AND SLOWER MOMENTS ∙ Outside, the grounds and gardens are stunning. There are so many lovely spots to sit, take in the scenery, and just slow down for a while. We saw people enjoying picnics on the grass, families exploring the gardens, and others simply wandering around taking photographs and enjoying the sunshine. It’s the kind of place that makes you want to properly switch off for the afternoon and just enjoy being there… so we did!

∙ ONE OF THE BEST LUNCHES WE’VE HAD IN AGES ∙ And then there was the café… which completely blew us away. We had a tartine with the most delicious greens and a side of new potatoes and honestly, it was one of the best lunches we’ve had in a long, long time. Fresh, simple food done exceedingly well. After the first mouthfuls, we started talking about when we could come back and have it again. We chose a table outside with views of the kitchen garden and we sat there and took it all in for another couple of hours.

∙ BRICK HISTORY THROUGH THE CASTLE ∙ As we explored the castle, there were little LEGO® displays dotted throughout the rooms in the castle as part of their Brick History exhibition. The setups highlight different moments from world history, from famous figures and discoveries to transport and exploration, adding an extra little point of interest as you move through the castle. It’s a lighthearted addition that younger visitors in particular will likely enjoy, and it brings a slightly different feel to exploring such a historic building. This exhibition ends of 10 June, 2026.

∙ A NOTE ON ACCESSIBILITY ∙ It’s worth mentioning that because of the age and historic nature of the castle, along with the varying levels throughout the gardens and grounds, there are few places there accessible for wheelchairs or buggies, and most areas would be difficult for anyone who isn’t steady on their feet. There are uneven surfaces, steps and sloped areas throughout much of the site, so it’s something to keep in mind when planning a visit. The cafe is accessible.

∙ A DAY OUT WE’LL REMEMBER FOR A LONG TIME ∙ By the end of the day, we just didn’t want to leave. Berkeley Castle has that rare combination of history, atmosphere, beautiful scenery and genuinely great food that turns a nice day out into something really memorable. Easily one of the best days out we’ve had in the Cotswolds and anywhere. We’ll certainly be back soon!
